A tracheostomy is a surgical technique that involves making an incision in the neck to provide access to the trachea. It is frequently used in medical conditions such as airway obstruction and prolonged mechanical ventilation. Effective nursing management is crucial for the long-term success of a tracheostomy.
Required Equipment
The equipment necessary for tracheostomy care includes:
Stepwise Procedure with Rationale
Here is a step-by-step pre-procedural preparation guide for tracheostomy care.
First, gather all necessary equipment to conserve time. This includes sterile gloves, goggles, masks, sterile saline, cotton-tipped applicators, gauze, a disposable inner cannula, a suction catheter, tracheostomy dressings and holders, and a plastic bag.
Perform hand hygiene to prevent cross-contamination.
Identify the patient to prevent errors.
Ensure the patient's privacy by closing curtains around the bed.
Determine the need for tracheostomy care. If the tracheostomy is new, analgesics may be needed before performing tracheostomy care.
Explain the process to the patient to alleviate fears.
Adjust the bed to a comfortable working position. Place the patient in a semi-Fowler's position if conscious or a lateral position if unconscious.
Lastly, put on the goggles and mask. Suction tracheostomy if necessary to clear secretions.
