Causes and Classifications
The etiology of intellectual disability can be organic or cultural-familial. Organic causes include genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome and Fragile X syndrome, and prenatal exposure to alcohol or toxins, which result in fetal alcohol syndrome. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a condition that results from exposing a developing embryo to alcohol, and intelligence levels can range from below average to levels associated with intellectual disability. Environmental factors, such as malnutrition, lack of stimulation, and inadequate healthcare, often underlie cultural-familial intellectual disability. This type of intellectual disability, with no identifiable physical damage, typically results in milder impairments.
Classifications range from mild to profound, based on the severity of deficits. Individuals with mild ID may achieve partial independence with support, while those with profound ID often remain fully dependent on caregivers due to severe limitations in all adaptive domains.
