The Nigerian military says its air force has killed dozens of armed criminals known locally as"bandits" in aerial bombardments in the north-western state of Zamfara.

In a statement on Tuesday, the air force said the operation targeted Makakkari forest, a known hideout for gangs blamed for high-profile kidnappings in the region.

The strikes were launched after surveillance drones spotted more than 400 armed men preparing to attack a nearby village, it added.

The air force said it had deployed fighter jets and helicopter gunships in the operation, working alongside ground troops.
