St Johns County Sheriff's Office Deputy Richardson performs the daring rescue

A Florida police officer has become an internet sensation after bodycam footage showed him single-handedly rescuing a feisty alligator from a residential swimming pool. The video, released by St Johns County Sheriff's Office, depicts Deputy Justin Richardson calmly reaching into the water to wrangle the 4ft (1.2m) reptile onto the pool deck using only his bare hands."He was super mad," Richardson later told local media, describing how the gator thrashed and snapped its jaws during the operation last Friday in St Augustine.

The startled homeowners had called authorities after discovering the uninvited swimmer in their backyard pool. Sheriff's office spokesperson Chuck Mulligan said the alligator likely wandered into the neighborhood during recent heavy rains that flooded local waterways. Richardson, a 12-year veteran with the department's Animal Services Unit, told reporters he relied on years of reptile-handling experience:"You gotta grab 'em right behind the head - that's the sweet spot."

After securing the thrashing gator with what witnesses called"almost casual confidence", Richardson carried it to his patrol car and drove it to a nearby pond for release. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission data shows the state averages over 16,000 nuisance alligator complaints annually, with licensed trappers removing about 7,500 yearly. While most encounters end peacefully, alligators have killed 26 people in Florida since 1948.

Sheriff Robert Hardwick praised his officer's composure, calling it"a textbook example of professional wildlife management". The viral video has garnered over 2 million views on social media, with users dubbing Richardson the"Gator Whisperer". Not all feedback was positive though - some wildlife experts criticized the hands-on approach as unnecessarily risky."Even small gators can inflict serious injury," cautioned herpetologist Dr. Samuel Waters."We always recommend calling professionals with proper tools."

The sheriff's office later tweeted that both officer and gator emerged unscathed, adding the hashtag #OnlyInFlorida - a nod to the state's reputation for bizarre wildlife encounters. Richardson, for his part, remains modest:"Just doing my job. Though I might start carrying a bigger net."
