At least 24 people have died and dozens of people are missing amid flash floods in Texas on Independence Day, according to US authorities.

"Within 45 minutes, the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet and it was a destructive flood," Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said.

"Rescue operations are ongoing but conditions remain dangerous," he added at a news conference on Friday morning.

Footage from the state shows the destruction caused by surging waters.

Homes were ripped from their foundations, vehicles were tossed like toys and campsites were washed away in the Hill Country region northwest of San Antonio.

"One minute we were grilling burgers, the next we saw our neighbor's house floating down the street," local resident Jake Morrison told the BBC.

The floods hit as millions of Americans were celebrating the Fourth of July holiday with fireworks and barbecues.

About 850 people have been rescued so far, officials said, but many more remain unaccounted for.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster in nine counties and activated the National Guard to assist with the rescue effort.

Meteorologists say more rain is forecast for the region over the coming days, raising fears of further flooding.
