French police have destroyed a migrant boat on a beach in northern France moments before it was due to set off for the UK, the BBC has witnessed.

Officers intervened as dozens of men, women and children were about to board the inflatable vessel in shallow water near Wimereux.
当数十名男女老少即将在维梅勒附近的浅水区登上充气船时，警察进行了干预。
One officer waded into the sea and slashed the boat with a knife, deflating it completely.

All those on board made it safely back to shore.

The dramatic scenes highlight the challenges French authorities face in policing the country's northern coastline, where people smugglers launch boats packed with migrants heading for England.

Under French law, officers cannot intercept boats once they have entered the water.

The incident occurred at around 06:00 local time (05:00 BST) on a stretch of beach near the town of Wimereux, about 30km (20 miles) from Calais.

BBC journalists watched as about 50 people, including several young children, gathered on the sand before dawn.

A French police spokesman told the BBC:"Our officers are working tirelessly to prevent these dangerous crossings while operating within the constraints of the law."

The UK government has pledged hundreds of millions of pounds to help France tackle people smuggling in recent years.

A UK Home Office spokesperson said:"We continue to work closely with French authorities to stop these dangerous crossings and bring the ruthless criminal gangs behind them to justice."

Charities working with migrants in northern France say the situation is becoming increasingly desperate.

"People are taking ever greater risks to reach the UK," said Clare Moseley of Care4Calais.
