Human remains discovered near a UNESCO World Heritage site in Guatemala are believed to be those of an American birdwatcher who vanished two and a half years ago, authorities said on Thursday. The skeletal remains and clothing were found 14km (9 miles) from the ancient Maya city of Tikal by villagers, matching the description of 66-year-old Raymond Ashcroft who disappeared during a birdwatching tour in February 2023.

Carlos Soza of Guatemala's Attorney-General's Office said a lilac shirt, sandals and shorts found with the bones matched what Mr Ashcroft wore when last seen."The remains were located in dense jungle only accessible by foot, consistent with the missing person's probable route," he told local media. DNA testing will confirm if the remains are the New York retiree's.

Mr Ashcroft was part of a group visiting Tikal National Park when he told his wife he was returning to their hotel early due to fatigue on 12 February 2023. She continued photographing birds with the tour, only realizing he was missing when he failed to arrive at their lodge. Local media reported search teams were deployed within 30 minutes of his separation from the group, with sniffer dogs combing the 576 sq km park's thick vegetation unsuccessfully.

Interpol issued a yellow notice weeks later but yielded no leads until this week's discovery."It's heartbreaking but provides closure," neighbor Linda Greenberg told the BBC."Ray loved birds so much - at least he died doing what he loved."

The 1,300-year-old archaeological site surrounded by rainforest has seen multiple tourist incidents. In 2022, a German hiker died of heatstroke after becoming separated from his group. The following year, a French family was rescued after two days lost in the park. Guatemalan tourism officials stress such cases are rare among Tikal's 300,000 annual visitors.

Mr Ashcroft's wife declined to comment but previously described her husband as"an experienced hiker who knew his limits". The US Embassy in Guatemala is assisting with identification and repatriation procedures.

The discovery comes as Guatemala promotes eco-tourism at its Maya sites."Visitor safety is paramount," tourism minister Oscar Morales said, announcing new GPS tracking devices for tour groups in remote areas starting next month. Meanwhile, Mr Ashcroft's local birdwatching club plans to install a memorial bench at Tikal's main observatory."Ray's passion for ornithology inspired us all," said club president Eduardo Mendez."We'll scatter his ashes here if the family agrees - it's what he would have wanted."
