India is bidding farewell to communist stalwart VS Achuthanandan, whose funeral with full state honours will be held Wednesday in his native Alappuzha district. The 101-year-old, who died Monday after a cardiac arrest last month, was a founding member of India's largest communist party and three-time opposition leader in Kerala state. Tens of thousands have flooded the streets to honour the man who rose from childhood poverty and police torture to become one of Kerala's most revered politicians.
"Fighting for the oppressed defined his life," CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby wrote in tribute, calling Achuthanandan"the epitome of struggle." Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, also from the CPI(M), hailed him as an"inexhaustible wellspring of inspiration." Though less internationally known than London-educated comrade Jyoti Basu - West Bengal's longtime chief minister - Achuthanandan's grassroots activism made him a folk hero. While Basu governed, Achuthanandan agitated, championing workers' rights from protest lines.

Orphaned young - mother dead at four, father at eleven - Achuthanandan left school to work in a coir factory. By 17, he'd joined the undivided Communist Party, organizing farmhands in British-era Travancore. Even political rivals admired his oratory; Congress leader AK Antony recalled skipping school in the 1960s to hear him speak in paddy fields. The Hindu quoted Antony calling Achuthanandan's leadership of the 1946 Kuttanad bonded laborers' revolt"unequalled in history," referencing the bloodshed (hundreds of communists reportedly killed) and torture he endured during years underground and in jail.

Achuthanandan served as Kerala's chief minister (2006-11), opposition leader (three terms), and CPI(M) Politburo member (23 years). But his true legacy lies in street politics - from leading nurses' strikes to fighting for fisherfolk rights. Even at 90, he was marching for farmers displaced by an airport project. Unlike the suit-clad Basu, Achuthanandan favored simple white mundu (dhoti) and shirts, his signature thick-framed glasses becoming a symbol of leftist integrity. As tributes pour in from across India's political spectrum, one thing is clear: the firebrand who once said"capitalism smells like rotting fish" has left an indelible mark on Kerala's soul.
