Chinese authorities have exposed a systematic cover-up by dozens of officials and medical staff in a lead poisoning case that sickened over 200 children at a private kindergarten in northwest China. A provincial investigation found that city officials in Tianshui, Gansu province, took bribes while neglecting food safety checks across preschools, and later tampered with blood test results of poisoned students from Peixin Kindergarten.

The report said chefs at Peixin Kindergarten used inedible paint to"enhance the appearance" of meals in an attempt to attract more students. Food samples were later found to contain lead levels 2,000 times above national safety limits. Initially eight people were detained for producing the toxic food, with six - including the principal, cooks and an investor - now formally arrested.

The Gansu CDC was ordered to test 267 students and staff after early symptoms appeared this month, but officials"failed to take it seriously", with the person in charge"severely violating procedures and distorting results".
