The rebuke came after Trump posted on Truth Social that India was"buying massive amounts of Russian Oil" and reselling it"for big profits", vowing to"substantially" raise tariffs in response. Last week he had called India a"friend" while complaining about its"too high" tariffs on US goods, warning of unspecified penalties over Russia ties. Bloomberg reported Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not ordered refiners to stop Russian purchases, citing sources. The threat marks a sharp turn from Trump's earlier stance - in February the US sided with Russia at the UN against a European resolution condemning Moscow's Ukraine actions.

He said India's transparent oil trade helped stabilise global markets after Western sanctions disrupted supplies, preventing a price shock. Public and private refiners make independent purchasing decisions based on price and supply security, without government direction, he added. Meanwhile, Trump has hardened his rhetoric against Moscow despite warmer ties since his return to office. He recently questioned Vladimir Putin's peace commitment, dubbing Russian forces the"War Machine" and setting an 8 August ceasefire ultimatum. US envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to visit Russia this week for talks with Putin.
