Aalborg Zoo in northern Denmark has launched an unusual initiative asking the public to donate healthy but unwanted pets - including rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens - to feed its carnivores. The zoo says the animals are"gently euthanised by trained staff" before being given to predators like lions, tigers and Eurasian lynx. In an Instagram post, it explained this helps imitate the animals' natural food chain, with smaller livestock being"an important part of our predators' diet".
The scheme also accepts live horse donations - with owners eligible for tax deductions if their animals meet criteria including possessing an equine passport and being disease-free for 30 days."When keeping carnivores, we must provide meat, preferably with fur and bones to mimic their natural diet," deputy director Pia Nielsen told the BBC."Using animals that need euthanasia anyway makes sense. This practice is common in Denmark."
Small animals can be dropped off on weekdays without appointment, though the zoo limits donations to four per visit. Larger livestock like horses require prior arrangement. On its website beneath a photo of a tiger eating meat, the zoo details equine requirements: minimum 148cm height, no behavioral issues, and no recent medical treatments.

While some may find the concept disturbing, Ms Nielsen stressed all procedures follow strict ethical guidelines."Our staff are specially trained in humane euthanasia methods," she said. The zoo has fed predators donated livestock for years, with many Danes appreciating the chance to contribute sustainably.
Animal rights group Dyrenes Beskyttelse expressed concerns, telling Danish media:"We question whether this is the right way to teach children about animal welfare." But the zoo insists it's transparent about the process, with educational displays explaining how carnivores eat whole prey in the wild.
The initiative comes as European zoos face rising meat costs and pressure to improve animal welfare standards. A 2023 study found predators fed whole prey show 40% fewer stereotypic behaviors like pacing."It's about balancing ethics with what's best for the animals," Ms Nielsen said.
