An Irish missionary and a three-year-old child are among nine people kidnapped from a Haitian orphanage near Port-au-Prince, officials said Sunday. Gena Heraty, director of the privately-run Sainte-Hélène orphanage in Kenscoff, was taken with seven staff members and the toddler during a morning raid, according to Mayor Massillon Jean. The attackers broke through a wall around 15:30 local time (07:30 GMT)"without firing shots" in what Jean described as a"planned operation". The facility cares for more than 240 children, some with disabilities.

Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste reported gang members are likely behind the attack. Ireland's Foreign Minister Simon Harris said"intensive efforts" were underway to secure Ms Heraty's release, adding he was in"close contact" with her family and local authorities."We will do everything possible to bring Gena, her colleagues and that little child home," Harris stressed in a statement. A source told AFP Ms Heraty called her organisation - Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs (Our Little Brothers and Sisters) - shortly after the kidnapping to confirm her abduction. No ransom demands have been made.

Born in County Mayo, Ms Heraty has received multiple humanitarian awards including the Oireachtas Human Dignity Award for her three decades of service in Haiti. Despite escalating gang violence, she told the Irish Times in 2022:"The children are why I'm still here. We're in this together." Kenscoff, on Port-au-Prince's southern outskirts, has faced relentless gang incursions since early 2025. Although Haitian police with Kenyan support and armed drones have tried to dislodge gangs controlling 85% of the capital, progress has been minimal.

The kidnapping follows the July abduction of six UNICEF staff in gang-controlled Port-au-Prince. While one was freed within 24 hours, five endured three weeks in captivity. Haiti's crisis continues deepening, with over 3,000 kidnappings reported in the first half of 2025 alone. As gangs grow bolder, even long-time humanitarians like Ms Heraty - who once said"I'll never abandon Haiti" - find themselves in unprecedented danger.
