A South African farm supervisor has testified that his white employer forced him to dispose of two murdered black women's bodies by feeding them to pigs, in a case that has reignited racial tensions in the country. Adrian de Wet, 20, told the Limpopo High Court on Monday that farm owner Zachariah Johannes Olivier, 60, shot dead Maria Makgato, 45, and Lucia Ndlovu, 34, last year when they were scavenging for expired dairy products left for livestock. As a state witness, Mr De Wet said he was coerced into throwing the victims into a pig enclosure - an act prosecutors argue was meant to destroy evidence.

The killings occurred in May 2023 near Polokwane in northern Limpopo province, where most commercial farms remain white-owned decades after apartheid ended. Ms Makgato and Ms Ndlovu were reportedly searching for soon-to-expire milk and yoghurt - commonly given to pigs - when Mr Olivier allegedly opened fire without warning. Mr De Wet's testimony, if accepted by the court, would see all charges against him dropped while Mr Olivier and a third accused, Zimbabwean farmhand William Musora, 50, face life sentences for murder, attempted murder and obstruction of justice.

The case has sparked nationwide outrage, with opposition party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) demanding the farm's closure."This is modern-day apartheid violence," EFF spokesperson Vuyani Pambo told reporters outside the packed courtroom, where victims' relatives wept as graphic details were read. Mr Olivier's wife, seated in the front row, was seen dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief. Racial inequality remains acute in South African agriculture - whites own 72% of farmland despite being 8% of the population, while black farm workers earn average monthly wages of just 2,800 rand ($150; £120).

Defense attorneys for Mr Olivier and Mr Musora, who remain jailed pending trial, argue their clients acted in self-defense, claiming the women were trespassing and threatening them with knives - an assertion the prosecution calls"ludicrous".

Outside court, Ms Ndlovu's husband - who survived being shot during the incident - told the BBC:"My wife went looking for food, not trouble. Now I have to explain to our children why their mother was fed to pigs." The case has also drawn attention to South Africa's immigration tensions, as Mr Musora faces additional charges for being an undocumented Zimbabwean national. Agriculture Minister Thoko Didiza warned the incident could fuel"xenophobic sentiments" among South Africa's poor black communities.
