Ion Iliescu, a figure whose name is intertwined with the tumultuous birth of modern Romania, has died at the age of 95. A career politician who shaped the country's transition from communism to democracy, he was both a beacon of hope and a deeply divisive presence in Romanian politics. His death on 5 August marks the end of a life spent at the heart of some of Romania's most dramatic and contentious moments."To understand Iliescu, you must grasp the complexity of Romania's 1990s," says political analyst Teodor Tita."He was neither a simple hero, nor a straightforward villain. He embodied the contradictions of a country struggling to reinvent itself while haunted by its past." Iliescu rose to prominence amid the chaos of the December 1989 revolution, when decades of Nicolae Ceausescu's oppressive rule came to an abrupt and violent end. Initially hailed as the man who would lead Romania into a new democratic era, Iliescu's legacy soon became more complicated.

His leadership steered the nation through its fragile early years of democracy and towards eventual integration with Nato and the European Union, achievements that many credit to his steady hand. Yet, as Teodor Tita explains:"His presidency was also marked by moments that still scar Romania's collective memory - the suppression of protests in 1990, the violent Mineriads, and his apparent reluctance to fully break with the old communist structures. These events have left a shadow that lingers."

Born on 3 March 1930 in the Danube town of Oltenita, Iliescu studied engineering in Moscow, Russia, during the Stalin era, where he became active in Romanian student political circles. His time in the Soviet Union would later fuel speculation – never proven – that he had ties with high-ranking communist figures, including Mikhail Gorbachev. After returning to Romania, Iliescu rose rapidly within the Communist Party, holding positions in propaganda and youth policy. But his reformist leanings eventually made him a target for Ceausescu, who marginalised him from the party's upper ranks. By the 1980s, Iliescu was out of politics and working as a director at a government-affiliated academic publishing house. His re-emergence during the 1989 revolution, which lasted from 16-25 December and saw more than 1,000 people killed, was seen by some as opportunistic, but to others, it was a stabilising presence amid chaos. As leader of the National Salvation Front (FSN), a political organisation that formed during the revolution, Iliescu became Romania's interim president and oversaw the rapid dismantling of Ceausescu's regime. On Christmas Day, Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife were executed by firing squad after a trial at a military base that lasted two hours.

In 1990, he won Romania's first democratic election in more than 50 years with a staggering 85% of the vote. But the campaign was marred by disinformation and state-aligned propaganda against liberal rivals. Later that year, Iliescu faced growing protests from students and opposition supporters. His now-infamous call for miners to descend on the capital to"restore order" led to days of brutal street violence known as the Mineriads, during which dozens were injured and several killed. He served another full term after winning the 1992 elections, then returned for a final presidency between 2000 and 2004. Turbulent years followed the revolution. Deep-rooted and insidious influential figures, dating back to the communist era persisted, and Iliescu's presidency was marked by widespread corruption. Critics argue that his reluctance to fully reform the justice system or confront the legacy of the Securitate – the feared secret police – allowed a culture of impunity to take root. More than three decades on from the revolution, Romania still struggles with political corruption and remains one of the poorest and most corrupt members of the European Union – a reality that some trace back to Iliescu's rule. His later years in office saw progress on Romania's Western integration – including Nato membership and the closing of EU accession talks. There were also market reforms, allowing small businesses to open, and Romania adopted its first democratic constitution in 1991, which still shapes the country today. But Iliescu remained dogged by questions over his role in the bloodshed of the early 1990s.

A former prime minister of Mali, which is now under military rule, has been charged with undermining the credibility of the state over comments on social media. After a prison visit to see detained opposition figures in July, Moussa Mara declared on X his"unwavering solidarity with prisoners of conscience". Mara, who served as prime minister for nine months a decade ago, has been a recent outspoken critic of the military government. The junta, in power since coups in 2020 and 2021, dissolved all political parties in May following rare anti-government protests.

On Thursday, Mara was detained and questioned for a second time by the national cybercrime unit about his 4 July X post. In the post, the ex-prime minister said his regular visits to see those detained were to make sure that"the flame of hope never fades in them"."As long as the night lasts, the sun will inevitably rise! And we will fight by all means to make that happen, and as soon as possible!" he added. The prosecutor at the cybercrime unit said that talking about"prisoners of conscience" and saying he wanted to fight for them constituted an offence, Radio France Internationale reports. On Friday, along with the accusation of undermining the credibility of the state, he was also charged with opposing legitimate authority and inciting public disorder. He is due to stand trial on 29 September.

Could this be the first time in history a social media spat triggers nuclear escalation? President Donald Trump, offended by posts by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, says he's ordered two nuclear submarines to move closer to Russia. So, how will Moscow respond? Are we on a path to a nuclear standoff between America and Russia? An internet-age version of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis? I doubt it, judging by initial reaction in Russia.

Russian news outlets have been rather dismissive of Trump's announcement. Speaking to the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper, a military commentator concluded that Trump was"throwing a temper tantrum". A retired lieutenant-general told Kommersant that the US president's talk of submarines was"meaningless blather. It's how he gets his kicks"."I'm sure Trump didn't really give any orders [about submarines]," a Russian security expert suggested to the same paper. Kommersant also mentions that in 2017, Trump said that he'd despatched two nuclear submarines to the Korean peninsula as a warning to North Korea. Yet not long after, Trump held a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. So, bizarrely, might Donald Trump's latest submarine deployment be a precursor to a US-Russia summit? I wouldn't go that far. But the reaction from the Russian authorities has been interesting. At time of writing, there hasn't been any. Not from the Kremlin. Not from the Russian foreign ministry. Nor the defence ministry. And I've seen no announcement about Russian nuclear submarines being positioned closer to America. Which suggests that either Moscow is still studying the situation and working out what to do, or that Moscow doesn't feel the need to react. The Russian press reaction I mentioned earlier suggests it's the latter.

Hamas has reaffirmed that it will not agree to disarm unless a sovereign Palestinian state is established, in response to one of Israel's key demands in talks about a ceasefire in Gaza. The Palestinian armed group said it was responding to remarks it attributed to US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff that Hamas had"expressed its willingness" to lay down its weapons. Israel considers the disarmament of Hamas one of several key conditions for any deal to end the conflict. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas to secure a ceasefire and the release of hostages stalled last week.

In the past few days, Arab governments have urged Hamas to disarm and surrender control of Gaza, after a number of Western countries - including France and Canada - announced plans to recognise a state of Palestine. The UK said it would if Israel did not meet certain conditions by September. Hamas - a proscribed terror group in the US, UK and EU - said in its statement that it could not yield its right to"resistance and its weapons" unless an"independent, fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital" was established. The Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) Lt Gen Eyal Zamir warned on Friday that there would be no respite in fighting in Gaza if negotiations failed to quickly secure the release of hostages being held by Hamas. And on Saturday, the family of hostage Evyatar David issued a statement after Hamas released a video showing him shirtless and emaciated in a dimly-lit tunnel. They accused Hamas of starving him as part of a propaganda campaign and appealed to the Israeli government and the United States to do everything possible to save him.

Witkoff has been visiting Israel as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government faces mounting pressure over the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza. UN agencies have warned there is man-made, mass starvation in Gaza, and have blamed Israel, which controls the entry of all supplies to the territory. Israel has insisted there are no restrictions on aid deliveries and that there is"no starvation". Earlier on Saturday, Witkoff met in Tel Aviv with families of Israeli hostages who are still in Gaza. Footage posted online showed the Washington negotiator being greeted with applause and pleas for help by supporters of the hostages' families as he arrived in a square that has become known for protests.

Witkoff said peace efforts should focus on ending the conflict and bringing home all the hostages, instead of what he called a partial deal. As part of Witkoff's trip, he met Netanyahu on Thursday and on Friday he inspected a widely-criticised aid site in southern Gaza. Latest figures from the United Nations say at least 1,373 Palestinians have been killed seeking food since late May. The family of Israeli hostage Evyatar David held by Hamas in Gaza has accused the group of deliberately starving him as part of a"propaganda campaign". The family statement on Saturday came a day after Hamas released a video showing an emaciated Mr David in a narrow concrete tunnel. Mr David, 24, has been in captivity since his seizure by Hamas at a music festival in southern Israel on 7 October 2023."We are forced to witness our beloved son and brother, Evyatar David, deliberately and cynically starved in Hamas's tunnels in Gaza - a living skeleton, buried alive," the family statement added.

The hostage's family also urged the Israeli government and the world community to do"everything possible to save Evyatar". In the video released by Hamas, Mr David is heard saying"I haven't eaten for days... I barely got drinking water" and is seen digging what he says will be his own grave. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had spoken to the families of Mr David and another hostage, Rom Braslavski, on Saturday. US envoy Steve Witkoff also met with families of some hostages on Saturday. In the evening, thousands turned out at a demonstration in Tel Aviv in support of their release. During its attack on Israel nearly two years ago, Hamas seized 251 hostages. Mr David is one of 49 hostages who Israel says are still being held in Gaza. This includes 27 hostages who are believed to be dead.

Israel has been accused by aid agencies of pushing Gaza towards famine by weaponising food in its war against Hamas - an allegation it denies. Israel has said there is"no starvation" and it is not imposing restrictions on aid entering Gaza - claims rejected by its close allies in Europe, the UN and other agencies active in the Strip. On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was"continuing the series of actions aimed at improving the humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip". It said that 90 aid packages containing food for residents in southern and northern Gaza had been airdropped in the past few hours as part of co-operation between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, France and Germany. Meanwhile, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said seven more people, including a child, died of malnutrition in the territory on Saturday. The health ministry said the total number of malnutrition deaths since the start of the war has reached 169, including 93 children. Also on Saturday in Gaza, the health ministry said at least 83 had been killed and 1,079 injured as a result of Israel's military offensive in the past 24 hours. Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat told the BBC it had received the bodies of three people killed by Israeli forces near an aid distribution point on Salah al-Din street, south of the Wadi Gaza area in central Gaza, run by the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The hospital said at least 36 people were injured. The IDF said its troops"fired warning shots" hundreds of metres away from the aid distribution site, and not during its operating hours, after a crowd did not comply with their calls not to advance towards them"in a manner that posed a threat"."The IDF is not aware of any casualties as a result of the warning shots, and the details of the incident are still being examined," it said. GHF said there was"nothing at or near our sites today". International journalists, including the BBC, are blocked by Israel from entering Gaza independently, making it difficult to verify claims.

Cars and smartphones may rank among South Korea's biggest exports to the US, but few goods inspire a more devoted following than the Asian country's beauty products. K-beauty - a term that covers a wide range of skincare, makeup and cosmetics from South Korea - is lauded for its quality and value, driving soaring demand in recent years. The global appeal of South Korean culture has also helped propel the popularity of its cosmetics. US-based Pearl Mak tells the BBC that she was introduced to K-beauty products by her friends. South Korean serums are better-suited for her skin compared to some Western brands that tend to be more harsh, the 27-year-old graphic designer says. Now"95% of my skincare is made up of K-beauty products", she adds. Ms Mak is not alone in her preference for South Korean skincare brands. Americans spent as much $1.7bn (£1.3bn) on K-beauty products in 2024, according to industry estimates. That marks a more than 50% rise compared to the previous year. K-beauty products are often more attractively priced than their Western counterparts - but also feature ingredients that are not as commonly found in the West - from heartleaf to snail mucin. US President Donald Trump has now imposed a 15% import tax on South Korean goods traded between Seoul and Washington. It's less than the 25% levy that Trump had threatened, but many consumers are not taking any chances.

US K-beauty retailer Santé Brand saw orders spike by nearly 30% in April, right after Trump unveiled sweeping US import taxes on most of the world."When the tariff announcements hit, customers got strategic with how they were going to weather the storm," Santé Brand's founder Cheyenne Ware told the BBC."Consumers are preparing against the uncertainty." Another K-beauty retailer, Senti Senti, has been ordering more products since Trump started his tariff threats, says manager Winnie Zhong. This week, she received alerts from suppliers urging retailers to"stock up before tariffs". Both retailers said prices of K-beauty products are likely to increase as the levies push up costs across the industry."Anyone telling you prices will stay flat through the next two years is naive," says Ms Ware. Prices are bound to rise, especially for smaller sellers of beauty products on platforms like Amazon, who operate with slim profit margins, economist Munseob Lee from the University of California San Diego says. Despite higher prices, the global popularity of South Korean culture means K-beauty products are likely to remain in demand in the US, he says."Casual buyers might be turned off by the higher price, but fans won't find an easy substitute." Ms Zhong agrees. She thinks customers will still want to buy K-beauty products but price rises may mean they purchase fewer items than before. Higher prices are unlikely to stop Ms Mak buying her favourite products."It depends on how much the price shoots up, but as of now, I am willing to pay more to purchase the same products," she says.

    'No easy substitute'

Big K-beauty brands are in a much better position to absorb the cost of tariffs than their smaller rivals, says South Korea-based business consultant Eyal Victor Mamou. These larger companies will be able to avoid major price rises for their customers as they have higher profit margins, he says. But smaller K-beauty firms that make their products in South Korea will struggle to keep a lid on costs, Mr Mamou adds."It will take some time to take effect since most goods being sold in the short-run have already been commissioned at current prices, but we'll see it play out soon."
