**The Trump administration is treating South Africa almost like a pariah, blacklisting its envoys, refusing to send top-level officials to meetings it hosts, and threatening to hit the nation with such high tariffs that its economic crisis is likely to deepen.**

**The latest sign of this came with the revelation by the second-biggest party in South Africa's coalition government, the Democratic Alliance (DA), that the US government had rejected President Cyril Ramaphosa's special envoy, denying him a diplomatic visa in May and refusing to recognise him as an"official interlocutor".**

**Ramaphosa had created the post for Mcebisi Jonas, the non-executive chairman of mobile phone giant MTN and a respected former deputy finance minister, to improve South Africa's rock-bottom relationship with the US.**

**Ramaphosa's spokesman accused the DA of"disinformation", but did not explicitly deny the party's claim.**

**The US State Department declined to comment when contacted by the BBC, citing"visa record confidentiality".**

**Jonas's appointment came after President Donald Trump had cut off aid to South Africa, accused Ramaphosa's government of persecuting white people, condemned it for binging a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and for"reinvigorating" relations with Iran - an implacable foe of the US.**

**Priyal Singh, a South Africa foreign policy expert at the Pretoria-based Institute for Security Studies think-tank, told the BBC that if the DA's claims about Jonas were true, it would be in line with the Trump administration's strategy to give South Africa the"cold shoulder, and cut off channels of communication that it so desperately needs".**

**The US has not only cut back bilateral relations with South Africa, but also boycotted it in global bodies like the G20 - which Ramaphosa currently chairs, hoping to advance the interests of developing nations in talks with the world's richest states.**

**The latest sign of this was US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's decision to skip Thursday's meeting of G20 finance ministers in South Africa, preferring to send a lower-ranking official instead.**

**Bessent skipped a similar meeting in February, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio stayed away from a meeting of G20 foreign ministers, saying Ramaphosa's government was doing"very bad things" and he could not"coddle anti-Americanism".**

**Ramaphosa had hoped to get relations with the US back on an even keel after Trump invited him to the Oval Office in May - only for the US president to ambush him by showing footage and brandishing a sheaf of spurious reports to advance his widely discredited claim that a genocide was taking place against white people in South Africa.**

    ---

**Gallo Images/Getty Images Mcebisi Jonas is a widely respected former deputy finance minister**

**Jonas was strikingly absent from Ramaphosa's high-powered delegation, giving credence to the DA's claim that he was unwelcome in Washington.**

**This put South Africa back to square one as the US had expelled its ambassador to Washington, Ebrahim Rasool, after he accused Trump, in a leaked speech given at a meeting of a think-tank, of"mobilising a supremacism" and trying to"project white victimhood as a dog whistle" as the white population faced becoming a minority in the US.**

**In a politically odd decision, Ramaphosa left the post vacant, despite its significance, suggesting that his government had a dearth of well qualified career diplomats who could rebuild relations with South Africa's second-biggest trading partner.**

**Instead, Ramaphosa pinned his hopes on a special envoy who, he said at the time of Jonas's appointment, would"lead negotiations, foster strategic partnerships and engage with US government officials and private-sector leaders to promote our nation's interests".**

**But it is unclear how Ramaphosa expected Jonas to achieve this given that he, like Rasool, had made controversial remarks about Trump, calling him a"racist" and a"narcissistic right-winger" in a 2020 speech that came back to haunt him after his appointment.**

**This was compounded by the fact that MTN had a 49% stake in Iran's telecom company IranCell, a major concern for the US.**

**Compared to its previous stances, South Africa was"more circumspect" - as Mr Singh put it - in its response to US air strikes on Iran in June, merely saying that it viewed the conflict with"great anxiety" and hoped that it could be resolved through dialogue.**

    ---

**W Gyude Moore, a policy analyst at the US-based Center for Global Development, told the BBC that it was not surprising that South Africa was in Trump's firing line.**

**He pointed out that South Africa championed what Trump's support-base saw as"woke culture".**

**For instance, Ramaphosa regarded the G20 as a forum through which to promote international"solidarity, equality and sustainability", which Rubio had opposed, equating it to"diversity, equity and inclusion", as well as climate change.**

**Mr Moore said this was also borne out in the Trump's administration's attitude towards South Africa's"black empowerment" policy, accusing it of"race-based discrimination" against white people.**

**Ramaphosa's government sees it as necessary to address the legacy of the racist system of apartheid.**

**"I cannot see how the differences can be resolved. South Africa will just have to carry on, and strengthen ties with other countries. It's not the only one in the crosshairs of the Trump administration," Mr Moore added.**

**But it is a major blow to South Africa, as it had maintained strong trade and aid relations with successive Republican and Democratic administrations despite having sharp differences with them.**

    ---

**Gallo Images/Getty Images South Africa has a long history of supporting the Palestinians**

**Mr Singh pointed out that South Africa, for example, opposed the Republican George W Bush's war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but South Africa still benefited from Pepfar, the programme he had established to tackle HIV/Aids, until the Trump administration slashed funding earlier this year.**

**"The Trump administration is completely different, and caught everyone off-guard. South Africa will just have to weather out the storm, and try to mitigate the damage," Mr Singh said.**

**But the economic consequences could be devastating - especially if Trump imposes 30% tariffs on South African goods from 1 August, as he has threatened to do.**

**South Africa's central bank chief Lesetja Kganyago said the tariffs could lead to around 100,000 job losses - worrying for a country where the unemployment rate stands at a staggering 32.9%.**

**The tariffs would hit South Africa's agriculture sector hard. This is ironic as Trump has portrayed himself as a champion of the country's Afrikaner farmers, offering them refugee status in the US.**

**It also gives them an opportunity to farm in the US and boost its economy in line with Trump's"America First" policy.**

AFP via Getty Images German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will sign a new UK-Germany agreement during his visit

Germany is set to tighten its laws to crack down on gangs smuggling migrants to the UK by the end of the year, Downing Street has said.

The announcement comes alongside a new agreement between the UK and Germany covering areas including migration, business and defence, which will be signed during Friedrich Merz's first official visit to the UK as German chancellor on Thursday.

The changes will make it illegal in Germany to facilitate illegal migration to the UK.

Facilitating people-smuggling is not technically illegal in Germany currently, if it is to a country outside the European Union - which, following Brexit, includes the UK.

Downing Street said the move will make it easier for German authorities to investigate and take action against warehouses and storage facilities used by smugglers to conceal small boats intended for illegal Channel crossings to the UK.

Berlin agreed to tighten its legislation in December under the previous government but the new chancellor is now expected to commit to changing the law by the end of the year.

A BBC investigation last year exposed the significant German connection to small boat crossings, with the country becoming a central location for the storage of boats and engines.

Sir Keir said:"Chancellor Merz's commitment to make necessary changes to German law to disrupt the supply lines of the dangerous vessels which carry illegal migrants across the Channel is hugely welcome."

The German agreement comes a week after the UK announced a new pilot returns scheme with France, during President Emmanuel Macron's state visit.

Under the"one in, one out" deal, some small boat arrivals would be returned to France in exchange for the UK accepting an equivalent number of asylum seekers with connections to the UK.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is under pressure to tackle the number of people crossing the Channel in small boats.

More than 21,000 people have made the dangerous journey so far this year - a 56% increase on the same period in 2024.

The Conservatives' shadow home secretary Chris Philp claimed the figures showed"the crisis in the Channel continues to spiral".

"This is just more of the same tired, headline-chasing from Keir Starmer," he said.

"He's scrambling to stay relevant with yet another gimmick, but this latest press release is not a plan but a distraction..."

"This government has clearly lost control of our borders and left the country exposed when they cancelled our returns deterrent."

Defence and security is also on the agenda for the visit, with the leaders set to discuss support for Ukraine.

The pair will unveil a new agreement to boost UK defence exports such as Boxer armoured vehicles and Typhoon jets, through joint export campaigns for co-produced equipment.

Downing Street said the agreement was likely to lead to billions of pounds of additional defence exports in the coming years, boosting the economy and jobs.

A cooperation treaty will also establish a new UK-Germany Business Forum to facilitate investment in the two countries.

A series of commercial investments in the UK are being announced to coincide with the visit, worth more than £200m and creating more than 600 new jobs.

Among the companies involved are defence tech firm STARK, which will create 100 jobs through a new facility in Swindon - marking the the company's first expansion outside of Germany.

As Serbia's anti-corruption protests enter their ninth month, they show no sign of abating – and are instead changing in their leadership, composition and tactics.

At the climax of last weekend's 140,000-strong protest in Belgrade's Slavija Square the students who led the protests since November declared that they would no longer spearhead the rallies.

They had set a deadline of Saturday for the government to call for fresh elections. When that was not met, they invited other groups to take on the protest mantle - and called for a campaign of"civil disobedience" from anyone opposed to the leadership of President Aleksandar Vucic and his long-governing Progressive Party (SNS).

Since then roadblocks have been popping up in cities across Serbia this week and people have been deploying dustbins, chairs and other improvised barriers to block junctions in major cities including Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis.

Local residents' associations - known as"citizens' assemblies" - have been heavily involved.

The EU, for its part, decried the"acts of hatred and violence" and called for calm.

Meanwhile, in Belgrade, the pop-up roadblocks continue – and so does the ensuing travel chaos for commuters.

One resident, while ruefully noting that she had to walk 5km (3 miles) to and from work, described the mood as more like a series of street parties than a protest.

But many observers doubt whether this approach will be any more effective than the months of rallies, faculty blockades and half-hearted general strikes.

The 2024 Novi Sad railway disaster

The protest movement started with a relatively simple purpose: to ensure accountability for last November's disaster at Novi Sad railway station, when a concrete canopy at the recently renovated facility in Serbia's second city collapsed, killing 16 people who were standing beneath it.

The outpouring of grief was instant – and the outrage swiftly followed.

Much of it has been directed at President Vucic.

But others have accepted his party's firm grip on state institutions and much of the media as a trade-off for strong economic growth and improvements in infrastructure.

The station disaster shattered that tacit agreement.

"We are all under the canopy" was one slogan frequently seen on banners in the early days of the protests.

Others included"blood on your hands" and"corruption kills".

University students took leadership of the movement, demanding full transparency about the railway station project and the prosecution of those responsible for the disaster.

Months of protests eventually forced the resignation of Milos Vucevic as prime minister.

One person has been killed and 26 others were injured after a night of intensive Russian strikes on almost every district in Kyiv, officials say.

A pall of acrid smoke hung over the Ukrainian capital on Friday morning following hours of nightfall punctuated by the staccato of air defence guns, buzz of drones and large explosions.

Ukraine said Russia fired a record 539 drones and 11 missiles.

The strikes came hours after a call between US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin, after which Trump said he was"disappointed" that Putin was not ready to end the war against Ukraine.

Moscow says the war will continue for as long as it is necessary to reach its objectives.

Russia's overnight air strikes broke another record, Ukraine's air force said, with 72 of the 539 drones penetrating air defences - up from a previous record of 537 launched last Saturday night.

Air raid alerts sounded for more than eight hours as several waves of attacks struck Kyiv, the"main target of the strikes", the air force said on the messaging app Telegram.

Footage shared on social media by Ukraine's state emergency service showed firefighters battling to extinguish fires in Kyiv after Russia's overnight attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as one of the most"demonstratively significant and cynical" attacks of the war, describing a"harsh, sleepless night".

Noting that it came directly after Putin's call with Trump, Zelensky added in a post on Telegram:"Russia once again demonstrates that it does not intend to end the war".

He called on international allies - particularly the US - to increase pressure on Moscow and impose greater sanctions.

It came after Washington decided to halt some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine, including those used for air defences.

"We spoke about opportunities in air defence and agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies," Zelensky said on X.

Kyiv has warned that the move to pause some shipments would impede its ability to defend Ukraine against escalating airstrikes and Russian advances on the frontlines.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the overnight strikes damaged railway infrastructure, while schools, buildings and cars were set ablaze across Kyiv.

Poland's Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, said the Polish consulate had also been damaged.

Rescuers also found a dead body while going through the rubble in the Svyatoshynsky district, the head of the Kyiv city military administration said.

Russia's defence ministry said the"massive strike" had been launched in response to the"terrorist acts of the Kyiv regime".

The acting governor of Russia's southern Rostov region said a woman was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on a village not far from the border on Friday night.

Friday's attacks were the latest in a string of major Russian air strikes on Ukraine that have intensified in recent weeks as ceasefire talks have largely stalled.

War in Ukraine has been raging for more than three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Following his conversation with Putin on Thursday, Trump said that"no progress" to end the fighting had been made.

"I'm very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin, because I don't think he's there, and I'm very disappointed," Trump said.

Responding to Trump's comments on Friday, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the BBC that as long as it was not possible to secure Russia's aims through political-diplomatic means,"we are continuing our Special Military Operation" - Russia's preferred name for the invasion.

Previously, Trump has said that the US is"giving weapons" to Ukraine, and hasn't completely paused the flow of munitions.

He blamed former President Joe Biden for"emptying out our whole country giving them weapons, and we have to make sure that we have enough for ourselves".

On Friday, Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte said that while he understands Washington's needs to maintain its own weapon stockpiles, he hopes"for a level of flexibility" to make sure Ukraine also has what it needs.

High-profile British sports agent Jonathan Barnett has been accused of raping a woman more than 39 times, in a US lawsuit.

The 75-year-old known for representing leading footballers including Gareth Bale and Jack Grealish, says the charges"have no basis in reality and are untrue".

In a civil complaint lodged at a US district court in Los Angeles, the unnamed woman, referred to as"Jane Doe", says Mr Barnett"trafficked" her from Australia to the UK in 2017,"tortured" and kept her as a"sex slave" over a six year period.

She says Mr Barnett made"repeated threats to her life and the lives of her minor children".

"We will vigorously defend this lawsuit through the appropriate legal process. I am looking forward to being entirely vindicated and exonerated," a statement from his lawyers said.

Mr Barnett was ranked as the world's most powerful sports agent in 2019 by Forbes magazine.

He co-founded London-based sports agency Stellar Group in 1994, eventually selling it to Hollywood talent agency ICM Partners in 2020. ICM was later bought by larger rival CAA in a deal that merged two of the world's biggest agencies.

The civil case against Mr Barnett, filed on Wednesday, uses the name CAA Stellar throughout to refer to his sports agency.

According to court documents, the pair first met in the 1990s through a professional athlete in London and reconnected online and then in person in 2017.

Within a matter of weeks she relocated to the UK with her teenage children - with sports agency CAA Stellar, headed by Mr Barnett, covering moving expenses.

The filing says that upon her arrival, he told her he"owned" her and raped her in a hotel room.

Mr Barnett went on to impose strict rules to obey him at all times, referring to him as"My Master" and to"never say it hurts", according to the lawsuit.

The complaint goes on to describe alleged degrading acts that included drinking urine or ingesting faeces.

The alleged torture also included the woman"tied up overnight without food or water".

She says she was"trafficked, threatened, tortured, and held" in bondage in different locations throughout the world, including Los Angeles, from 2017 to 2023.

"Realising she was powerless against a dangerous predator, Ms Doe submitted to Barnett in order to avoid being severely beaten or even killed," the lawsuit said.

Two female tourists, including a British pensioner, have been killed by a charging elephant while on safari in Zambia, police have told the BBC.

Easton Taylor, 68, from the UK and 67-year-old Alison Taylor from New Zealand were attacked by a female elephant that was with a calf at the South Luangwa National Park, said local police chief Robertson Mweemba.

The two tourists were trampled to death by the nursing elephant after efforts by tour guides to stop it by firing shots failed.

Both women died at the scene, he said.

The British Foreign Office said it was supporting the family of a British woman who had died in Zambia and was liaising with local authorities.

Mr Mweemba said the two women were part of a guided safari group who were walking in the park on Thursday when the elephant charged towards them at high speed.

The two tourists had stayed for four days at the Big Lagoon Camp, about 600 km (370 miles) from the capital, Lusaka, where the attack happened.

"They were moving to other camps when the elephant charged from behind. We are really sorry that we have lost our visitors," Mr Mweemba said.

"They both died on the spot," he added.

It is not clear whether the pair were related.

Female elephants are very protective of their calves and Zambian authorities have previously called on tourists to exercise extreme caution while observing wildlife around the country.

"It is very difficult to control the animals and tourists like feeding them," Mr Mweemba said.

Last year, two American tourists were killed in separate attacks by elephants in the southern African country.

Both cases involved elderly tourists who were in a safari vehicle when they were attacked.
